Which skate model and size should you choose?
When buying hockey skates, it’s important to focus on the right fit, comfort, and support to optimize your performance on the ice and minimize the risk of injury. Choosing the correct size and width is crucial, as it directly affects both comfort and control. A general rule of thumb is that the skate’s internal length should be about 5-7 mm longer than your foot. The skate should fit snugly without causing pain from being too tight. You should be able to wiggle your toes in the toe box while ensuring your heel remains secure without slipping.
Depending on your weight, you should choose either a softer or a stiffer skate. The stiffness affects how you can bend your knee and move your foot, which in turn influences your balance and technique. Buying skates that are too stiff can make skating more difficult and hinder your development, while skates that are too soft may not provide the necessary support.
For heavier hockey players, we recommend our CCM Tacks skates. Tacks offer a stiffer structure that provides greater power on the ice without sacrificing comfort. Our other model, Jetspeed, has a moderate stiffness level, making it ideal for players looking for a versatile, all-around skate that isn’t overly rigid. Both Tacks and Jetspeed skates are available in tapered, regular, or wide fits.
Keep in mind that if you spend more than four days a week on the ice, you should consider having an extra pair of skates. The materials need time to rest and dry, which helps prolong their lifespan.
Sizing Guidelines: When you receive your skates, try them on and push your foot forward so that your toes (while flat) barely glance the toe cap.Bend your knee forward and look behind the heel of your foot down the skate. If you can fit a finger behind the heel easily, the skates are too big.A fingertip should be securely wedged between the heel of your foot and the back side of the skate. While all players might have their own preference for fit, hockey skates should be 1 ½ sizes down from your shoe size. For most players this will be close to the proper fit. For example,if you are a US Men's shoe size 9, you would want to go with a skate size 7.5.
